Symptoms Of GERD

Posted by Bapak at 5:53 PM

GERD (gastroesophagal reflux disease) is the result of acid reflux, the main cause of heartburn. Heartburn is the condition resulting from the acid in the stomach not being contained and seeping back through the LES (lower esophageal sphincter), and when this gets extreme it causes damage to the oesophagus and throat resulting in the nasty condition that is gerd throat.

The symptoms manifest themselves in a sore throat, vomiting, regurgitation, painful heartburn and excessive coughing especially at night. Complications of gerd throat can become serious. Hence, it must be treated by a doctor or it can develop into something more serious like ulcers, laryngeal inflammation and infection of the lungs and affecting the fluid in the middle ear and sinuses and in some cases if not treated can lead to cancer. It may require an endoscopy, x rays or biopsies to confirm the diagnosis, but as with so many conditions prevention is better than cure!

As acid regurgitation is the main cause of this disease, a way should be found to prevent that acid causing a problem in the first place. Acid is necessary for the breakdown of the food and drinks we consume when it reaches the stomach, so an appropriate diet can be a great help to a cure.  Food that can do this are anything fat free in dairy products, lean meat, fish not fried, skinless chicken, apples, bananas, cherries and most grains or cereals, so bread and some low fat cakes are good.

Alcohol, caffeine in tea and coffee, garlic, and anything citrus with the exception of oranges, spicy foods and fried or fatty food and anything with a high fat content either animal or vegetable are the main culprits. So, these food stuffs should be avoided to prevent the acid reflux leading to gerd throat.

Being overweight also doesn't help and eating huge meals especially just before bedtime should be avoided. During the day, acid reflux happens but continual swallowing and saliva being sent into the stomach acts as a neutraliser to the acid. While asleep these things do not happen, so acid or bile remain in the throat and causes irreparable damage. Gerd throat if not prevented can be with you till the last day of your life. Therefore, it must be taken seriously.

Also as a bonus to watching your diet, you will also lose weight and feel so healthier.
